I just decided I felt like completing Crystal over. However, I'm in a semi-dilemma: When to evolve Pokémon with stones, Staryu in particular.

I realise it can't learn new moves naturally after evolving, but I'm wondering whether to wait for it to learn the very last move, Hydro Pump, or just to go for it now (it's at level 30, lacking Minimize, Light Screen, Cosmic Power and Hydro Pump).

On another note, I really think your site is a great resource. Keep it up! Big Grin
If I were you, I would wait until Staryu learned Hydro Pump. This way, you will have a Pokemon with a great water move in case you need it.
It really depends, foo... Iw ould not wait for Hydro Pump since I prefer Surf over it. But it entirely up to you.
I do have Surf, but Hydro Pump has a power of 120 while Surf only has 95.

Are there any specific things I should take into consideration before making my decision?

Well, the move set I'm considering is:
  • Surf
  • [some water move, could be hydro pump]
  • Ice Beam
  • Recover

Anything you'd suggest to change?
Yes but surf has 100/100 accuracy while Hydro Pump has 80.Surf can be used 15 times, too.I would suggest to keep this moveset but place confuse ray/psychic instead of the second water move.
I already have an Alakazam with Psychic, so I don't know if that'd be a good idea.

I'll consider Confuse Ray.

Thanks!
You can also use thunderbolt but psychic will do more damage as it gains STAB.
Thunderbolt is great on Starmie... Trust me! Starmie makes one really good Special Sweeper, combining a versitile movepool, a good Special Attack and an excellent speed.
Well, how exactly would I make it learn Thunderbolt - there isn't a TM for it, as far as I know.
Actually, I think there is a TM that contains Thunderbolt and you can take it at a Game Corner. I just don't remember in which game of R/S/E/FR/LG...
I think we are talking about Crystal here. There is not a TM but there is a person outside the Game Corner that can teach it to your pokemon once a week.(I do not remember the day)
Okay, sorry. My mistake... Sad
Ah, the Move Tutor I'm assuming. I'll definitely go to him when I can, but I have to beat the Elite Four before doing so; I'm just about there right now - if anyone would care to comment on my planned team?

L48 Golem (Soft Sand):
- Rollout (not sure about this one)
- Explosion
- Magnitude
- Earthquake

L?? Starmie (Mystic Water or Nevermeltice):
- Surf
- Bubblebeam / Hydro Pump / something else
- Icy Wind (can't get Ice Beam before beating Elite 4 either)
- Recover

L40-something Alakazam (Twisted Spoon require Yellow, so I don't know):
- Psychic
- Either of the Punches (Fire, Ice, Thunder?)
- (unsure) Future Sight
- ?

L40-something Typhlosion (Charcoal):
- Flame Wheel
- Headbutt
- ?
- ?

L40-something Machamp (Blackbelt):
- Vital Throw
- Karate Chop
- Another one of the Punches
- ?

L40-something Victreebell (Miracle Seed):
- Razor Leaf
- Sleep Powder (maybe)
- ?
- ?

As you can see, I'm quite uncertain about many of these...
Well, I'm pretty much at level 46 now - should I have Hydro Pump as one of my moves? If yes, should it replace Bubblebeam or Icy Wind?
