3DS isn't just an upgrade of the original DS, it's a brand new console. New hardware, bigger games, motion gaming and 3D.
But I'm sure there are going to be many more versions of it(like DSi, DS Lite etc)...

The name is good, because it has 3D in it and it also shows that it is the successor to the DS.
With 3d it means it should have 3 screens. That would be awsome.

1 week ago I saw the dsi XL for the first time.I had never seen a dsi.It has a wide menu (even though I don't know how most things work) and the design was a bit better than that of the ds lite.Now, a 3DS? I still don't believe if this is even possible without the 3D glasses.Does that mean the games will be different for ds/dsi and 3DS? I just hope they come out for both consoles.
